Front-End Developer
About Maurten
Maurten fuels the fastest to gold medals and world records. Using patented Maurten Hydrogel Technology, athletes can more easily tolerate sports fuel while training and racing. The innovation allows carbohydrates to be encapsulated in hydrogel and transported smoothly to the intestines where they are broken down and used as fuel. Combining research–driven development alongside feedback from runners, cyclists, and triathletes, Maurten’s fueling ecosystem enables all humans to become greater athletes.
Maurten is moving fast. We’re looking for people who share our passion for sport — and who want to shape the way athletes around the world fuel.
Job responsibilities
As part of the Sports Tech team, the front-end developer will work with the R&D and Design team to turn scientific and product requirements into elegant, scalable interfaces aligned to Maurten’s de-sign language. Own the front‑end architecture and tooling across our web applications, establishing a shared component library/design system and setting standards for state management, routing, performance budgets, and testing. Deliver secure, accessible, and performant UIs and integrate cleanly with back‑end services while collaborating on API contracts and data models. Champion engineering quality through reviews, linters, type safety, automated tests, and CI/CD, and instrument products for observability and learning. Ensure data privacy and compliance (e.g., GDPR), follow re-lease governance, and document decisions, systems, and runbooks to enable reliable operations and handover.
Experience with cross-platform frameworks (e.g., React Native, Expo, or similar) is highly valued, as we explore extending our web experiences to mobile platforms.
Running Tasks
- Build and ship user-facing features across our external and internal tools with TypeScript/Re-act (or equivalent modern framework) and CSS/utility-first styling.
- Maintain and evolve the front-end codebase: refactoring, dependency hygiene, and performance tuning against agreed budgets.
- Guard accessibility and quality: conduct audits, write tests (unit/e2e), and resolve defects with urgency.
- Operate production systems: triage issues, monitor health, and drive continuous improve-ment using telemetry and user feedback.
- Collaborate with Design to review components and interactions; ensure pixel-perfect execution where it matters and purposeful pragmatism elsewhere.
Developing Tasks
- Stand up and steward a Maurten front-end design system and component library (theming, tokens, documentation site, contribution guidelines).
- Prototype new interaction patterns and data visualizations to explore concepts rapidly and validate with stakeholders and users.
- Introduce progressive enhancements (PWA capabilities, offline modes, background sync) where they improve athlete experience.
- Evolve build and release workflows (modular monorepo, CI pipelines, preview environments, visual regression testing).
- Evaluate emerging web technologies and frameworks for future adoption; create lightweight RFCs to guide decisions.
Who you are:
As part of a small and quickly growing team, you demonstrate a strong ownership mindset — ac-countable for outcomes, pragmatic about trade-offs, and proactive in reducing technical debt. You’re a collaborative communicator who works effectively across relevant teams (Design, R&D, and Sport Tech), with clear written and verbal alignment. You’re user-centred and data-informed, combining qualitative insights with telemetry to guide decisions. With a passion for sports and performance and with high scientific credibility, you combine high standard front-end development with domain knowledge to create solutions that help athletes. A curious, systematic and resilient mindset lets you comfortably iterate, experiment and learn.
Required
- Proven experience delivering modern, production-scale web applications.
- Minimum 2 years of experience
- Expert knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 (including modern layout systems), and TypeScript/JavaS-cript.
- Deep hands-on experience with React (or similar, e.g., Next.js), including state management (Redux or Zustand), data fetching (React Query) and form handing and validation (Formik/Yup).
- Proficiency with component styling frameworks such as Styled Components or Tailwind CSS and familiarity with UI libraries (Radix UI/Material UI/Hero UI).
- Strong testing practice (Jest/Vitest, Playwright/Cypress) and CI/CD familiarity.
- Accessibility proficiency (WCAG 2.1+), performance optimization (LCP/CLS/INP), and responsive design.
- Comfortable integrating REST/GraphQL APIs and working with design tools (e.g., Figma) and design tokens.
- Version control (Git) and collaborative workflows (code reviews, trunk/branch strategies).
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in relevant field
Nice to Have
- Mobile/web cross-platform exposure (E.g. Flutter, React Native) and an interest in extending web experiences to mobile is a strong plus.
- Data visualisation (D3, Charting libs) and/or WebGL/Canvas (Three.js) for performance ana-lytics.
- Experience with SSR/SSG (Next.js), edge runtimes/CDNs, and cloud hosting (e.g., Vercel/Az-ure).
- Familiarity with Node.js back-end patterns, authentication/authorisation, and security best practices.
- Understanding of sports performance domains, wearable data, or human-computer interaction.

About Maurten
In 2015, we found a way to make sports fuels easier to tolerate, by encapsulating carbohydrates in hydrogels.
The method was so successful, that one year later, some of the world's best marathoners were fuelling their training sessions and competitions with our technology. It’s the science that has taken us this far. Now we're working together with several international research initiatives and universities. A number of studies are evaluating our technology and products.
